MECHANICAL SCARIFICATION: The process of mechanically scarifying a creekbed to facilitate salmon and trout spawning. This is a fundamental technique to open embedded cobble. This procedure is paramount for restoring embedded streambeds. The operator must be knowledgeable about benthic conditions and habitat requirments.
MATHER VERNAL POOLS:
These sensitive habitats are unique. They have three phases: wet, blooming and dry.
PETERSON VERNAL POOLS: This is a unusual project. The property is owned by the Solano County Water Agency. They support protecting listed species and increasing their population.
ALGAE AND OXYGEN PRODUCTION:
Marine diatoms make from 60-80 percent of the oxygen on Earth. Because the ocean is a carbon sink, it makes sense that the vast oceanic water contributes so much to oxygen production. These are diatoms, but freshwater species.
WILD TROUT:
Wild Trout are a special group of fish.
BURROWING OWLS:
Burrowing owls are very cool birds. They live in squirrel burrows. Yep, they live underground. Image from a restoration site south of Dixon CA., on a ranch owned by Solano County Water Agency.
FOREST MANAGEMENT:
A special project. The Caldor fire burned more than 200,000 acres. Sad, yet we find some life out there in all that death. These images did not work for me until I went with black and white.
BUTTE CREEK:
Butte creek near Chico California is a refuge for the listed Spring-run salmon.
IMAGE CAPTURE:
This gorgeous cinnamon-phase black bear was stalking the spawning Spring-run salmon in Butte Creek. He failed.
AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES:
Aquatic invertebrates and algae are the base of the aquatic food web.
PETROGLYPHS:
These "Rock Art" areas must be protected and preserved whenever possible. They are an important segment of Native American history.
